“EquiSilver is another all natural product that kills bacteria and fungus on contact. The silver instantly alleviates pain. Results are very quick and healing time is sped up considerably. 5 Essentials In Case of Equine Emergency

Equine Emergency Essentials

When dealing with horses, accidents happen. Your horse’s wellbeing is your highest priority. Don’t be caught without these 5 essentials in case of an equine emergency.

1. Thermometer

One of the earliest signs of illness can be fever. Make sure you have a thermometer on hand in your barn. A basic vet thermometer like this one will get the job done. Make sure to tie a string or yarn to the end – this thermometer has a ring for it at the top but the string itself is not included.

2. Towels

You can never have enough towels at the barn. For wound situations, these MicroFiber towels work great because they are lint free. Use them to clean small wounds or to apply pressure to stop bleeding. Hand wash and air dry (or toss after use as there are 2 in a pack).

3. Wound Spray

There are many different wound sprays available, but one of the most commonly used is Betadine. Betadine is a microbicidal antiseptic sudsing cleanser containing Providone Iodine (7%) that promptly kills bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa and yeasts. A new product line to hit the market, EquiSilver, uses chelated silver as an active ingredient. It is 100% natural, non-toxic and testing has shown it to kill over 600 disease causing organisms. Their wound spray is quickly gaining popularity. Make sure to keep at least one of these products on hand to ward off infections under the supervision of your veterinarian.

4. Gauze / Cotton

Your vet may instruct you on how to dress a wound. A great option for dressing wounds is our Dura-Tech® Absorbent Cotton Wool & Gauze Roll which will not stick to wounds and can be cut to any size. Highly absorbent hospital grade cotton with non woven outer cover, it is great for protecting injuries while allowing them to heal.

5. Dressing Bandage

Keep a wound dressing in place with a self-adhering bandage such as Guard Tex Leg / Tail Wrap. The wrap is made of surgical gauze impregnated with natural latex and it adheres only to itself. It makes a “soft cast” when used over quilts and is very resilient. Another option is to use Dura-Tech® Vet Flex which hand tears and adheres to itself.

Need something for travel? This veterinarian approved Horse Aid™ First Aid Kit contains all the essentials you need. Keep one in your barn and trailer at all times!

When injuries occur, always contact your veterinarian.

Foaling in February – Prevent Hypothermia

Foaling early in the year is common, and it is essential to keep a new foal warm and dry after birth. Schneiders has several great options for your foal!

UltraFlex Foal Saver

UltraFlex® Foal Saver®

UltraFlex® Foal Saver®
Our Foal Saver® has Tekno-Dri® lining to help finish drying the newborn foal’s coat after birth and prevent hypothermia. It has additional layers of polarfleece and fiberfill insulation for warmth and moisture transport. The outer cover is high count cotton so that you can wash it repeatedly. The expandable Velcro front and Velcro bellyband fastening allows you to expand the fit as the foal grows. It also features a comfortable stretch shoulder. It is available in four sizes to fit any breed of foal, from Miniature to Warmblood!

From a customer in Doylestown, PA -
“I have 5 of these for my foaling facility. Wash in cold water, line dry, no bleach but oxiclean is OK for manure stains. Great for weak or preemie foals, keeps their body temperature up. Take care to adjust belly velcro strap away from foal’s umbilical stump, and watch that colts do not pee inside that strap. My foal blanket wardrobe numbers in the dozens, and the UltraFlex Foal Savers are my go-to choice, with Schneider’s Tekno-Fleece Foal Warmer my 2nd choice because of its stay-put, snugly adjustable nature.”

Tekno-Fleece Foal Warmer

Tekno-Fleece Foal Warmer

Tekno-Fleece® Foal Warmer
This Foal Warmer is made of non-pilling polarfleece for warmth and wickability. It slips over the head and has a jersey knit insert around the neck. It features a Velcro bellyband closure and has excellent moisture transfer capability to keep your foal warm and dry! May be used independently or as a liner.

Dura-Nylon Expandable Foal Blanket

Interesting Foaling Facts

Foaling Facts

For further questions or advice on foaling please contact your veterinarian.

February is here and foaling season has begun. If you have never bred horses, we’ve compiled some basic information to educate you on the foaling process! Here are some interesting facts:

1. Normal gestation for mares is 305 to 395 days, with an average of 340 days. The factors that can influence the length of gestation include the age of the mare, the time of year, genetics of the foal, stress, infection and nutrition. Light breeds tend to have longer gestation periods than draft breeds.

2. A mare in early labor resembles a colicky horse as she may get up and down, sweat and paw. The difference is that she will grab bites to eat, whereas a colicky horse is generally not interested in food.

3. A mare in active labor should take a maximum of 30 minutes to deliver a foal after her water breaks.

4. After birth, the mare may lay on the ground for 10 to 20 minutes. This is nature’s way of making sure the foal gets its full blood supply. As much as 25 to 35 percent of the foal’s blood is in the placenta at birth.

5. The mare’s first milk (colostrum) contains ingredients crucial to the foal’s health and survival. A foal that nurses soon after birth is more lively and strong than one that delays nursing.

Horse Blanket Troubleshooting Solutions

Horse Blanket Troubleshooting

Schneiders wants to make blanketing your animals as hassle-free as possible. Horses will be horses, and as owners we sometimes have to do a bit of troubleshooting. Some common annoyances with blanketing horses include blanket tears, dirty Velcro closures that are no longer effective and blanket rubbing. Stress no longer – Schneiders has the following horse blanket solutions!

1.StormShield® Blanket Repair Tape
Even the strongest blankets can tear, either on the outer shell or on the lining. Having them repaired can be expensive and time consuming. The simplest solution is to use Schneiders’ StormShield® Blanket Repair Tape. It allows you to quickly and easily repair waterproof turnout blankets in minutes. It is offered in 18” strips in 10+ colors, and costs much less than a typical blanket repair ($2.95 a strip). Don’t let your horse go without a blanket just because it needs repaired! Fix it at home with StormShield® Blanket Repair Tape. Click here to view a video tutorial!

2.Velcro Restorer Brush
I am a fan of Velcro assist front closures on turnout blankets. They keep the front of the blanket closed so that it doesn’t bunch up behind the buckles after your horse has been moving around. The problem, though, is that the Velcro doesn’t stand a chance of staying clean in the barn and soon loses its effectiveness. This Velcro restorer brush brings it back to life in no time, and is cost effective to boot. It is one of those items you don’t think to shop for, but can’t live without once you own one.

3.UltraFlex® Shoulder Slicker
Even the best fitting blankets can leave rub marks on sensitive horses. If you are showing and want to prevent rubs and hair loss on the base of the mane and top of the withers, or if your horse is sensitive but needs to stay blanketed, try using a shoulder slicker. The lycra prevents friction from blanketing so hair loss is kept to a minimum. Schneiders’ UltraFlex® Shoulder Slicker is made of 8 oz durable lycra with a Velcro closure at the neck and an elastic girth strap to keep it securely in place. Our slickers are sized to fit weanlings up to large warmbloods (sizes 64 – 86).
